Introduction
THOR’s most important innovation is not extreme precision. It is the use of a microwave engagement area wide enough to affect several drones during a single engagement cycle. That design choice changes the basic mathematics of drone defence. Instead of treating a swarm as dozens of separate targets that must each be tracked and defeated in sequence, THOR aims to impose an electronic effect across a portion of the airspace where multiple drones are operating. The concept is especially relevant because modern drone swarms seek to overwhelm defenders through numbers, forcing rapid targeting decisions and exhausting interceptors. Publicly released Air Force test information repeatedly highlights THOR’s ability to engage multiple drones and describes its wide beam as a key factor in successful swarm demonstrations. Why Swarms Create a Saturation Problem
A drone swarm does not need every aircraft to survive to create a challenge. The defender must detect, identify, track, prioritise and engage many moving objects at nearly the same time. Even relatively inexpensive drones can become dangerous when they arrive together from different directions or in rapid succession.
Traditional air-defence systems often face a scaling problem. A missile, gun burst or laser engagement is usually directed at a single target. The more drones that appear, the more engagements must be performed. This creates a race between the swarm’s arrival rate and the defender’s engagement rate. If enough drones arrive simultaneously, some may penetrate simply because the defence cannot process them all quickly enough. High-power microwave programmes such as THOR were developed specifically to address this “one-to-many” challenge rather than the more familiar “one-to-one” engagement model. The Air Force Research Laboratory has consistently described THOR as a counter-swarm system engineered to defeat multiple targets with rapid results. Public demonstrations have focused on swarming scenarios rather than isolated drone engagements, reflecting the programme’s intended role. How Broad Microwave Effects Differ From Lasers
The contrast between THOR and a laser-based defence illustrates why the wide-beam concept matters.
A laser concentrates energy onto a very small spot. This can be highly effective against a selected drone, but the system must generally dwell on each target long enough to achieve the desired effect. The engagement process is therefore tied to individual targets. A high-power microwave system works differently. Rather than burning through a specific point on a drone, it attempts to create an electromagnetic effect that interferes with or damages electronics. Because the energy can cover a broader volume of space than a laser spot, multiple drones located within that volume may be affected during the same engagement. Public descriptions of THOR repeatedly emphasise its wide beam and its ability to disable multiple drones rather than prosecuting them one at a time. A useful way to understand the distinction is that lasers are optimised for precision, while systems like THOR are optimised for engagement density. The question is not merely “Can I hit this drone?” but “How many drones can I influence before the swarm reaches its objective?” [Military.com+2Task & Purpose]military.comtop general mideast calls microwave weapons layered defense against drone swarmsTop General in Mideast Calls for Microwave Weapons…11 Mar 2024 — While lasers provide point defense against individual drones, microwa…
What the Wide Beam Actually Changes
Fewer Individual Engagement Decisions
A broad microwave effect reduces the need to assign a separate shot to every drone. If several drones occupy the engagement area, one microwave discharge may affect multiple aircraft at once. This shifts the defender’s task from managing numerous individual intercepts to positioning the beam where the greatest concentration of threats exists. Better Performance Against Dense Formations
Swarms are often most dangerous when many drones are grouped together. In that situation, the wide beam becomes more valuable because more aircraft may be exposed to the electromagnetic pulse simultaneously. The Air Force’s 2023 swarm demonstration specifically highlighted THOR’s wide beam as a major factor in disabling the attacking swarm. Reduced Dependence on Perfect Precision
A laser system generally requires highly accurate pointing and sustained tracking of a specific target. A microwave engagement area allows more tolerance because the desired effect is spread across a broader volume of airspace. This does not eliminate tracking requirements, but it reduces the importance of maintaining pinpoint focus on each drone individually. Technical discussions of high-power microwave counter-swarm systems frequently identify reduced aiming demands as one of their advantages against large groups of small drones. Potentially Faster Swarm Suppression
The attraction of the wide-beam model is engagement speed. If a single microwave event can influence several drones, the defence can theoretically reduce the number of engagement cycles required to suppress a swarm. This is one reason military planners often view microwave systems as complementary to lasers rather than direct replacements. Lasers excel against selected targets, while microwave systems offer a way to manage large numbers of drones quickly. Evidence From THOR Testing
Publicly available information about THOR remains limited, but the available test reports consistently point toward the value of the wide-beam approach.
In a major Air Force Research Laboratory demonstration announced in 2023, THOR engaged a realistic drone swarm and was described by programme officials as “exceptionally effective” due to its wide beam, high peak power and ability to track targets. The event represented the largest THOR swarm test publicly discussed by AFRL at that time. [Air Force Research Laboratory+2Unmanned Airspace]afrl.af.milAir Force Research Laboratory AFRL conducts swarm technology demonstrationAir Force Research LaboratoryAFRL conducts swarm technology demonstrationMay 16, 2023 — 16 May 2023 — “THOR was exceptionally effective a…
AFRL also reported that THOR had previously engaged multiple targets successfully and was specifically designed around the counter-swarm mission. Public videos and official descriptions repeatedly frame the system as a tool for turning off or disabling groups of drones rather than defeating individual aircraft sequentially. These demonstrations do not prove that every swarm can be defeated under all operational conditions. However, they do provide evidence that the core one-to-many engagement concept can work in controlled testing against multiple airborne drones. What Wide Beams Help and What They Complicate
The same feature that makes THOR attractive also creates limitations.
Wide-area microwave effects are most useful when drones are sufficiently concentrated within the engagement region. If a swarm spreads out over a large volume of airspace, fewer drones may be exposed during any single discharge. The effectiveness of the one-to-many concept therefore depends partly on swarm geometry and timing. [The War Zone]twz.comThe War Zone THOR Microwave Anti-Drone System Downs Swarms In TestThe War ZoneTHOR Microwave Anti-Drone System Downs Swarms In TestMay 19, 2023 — A high-power microwave counter-drone system, the containe…
A second challenge is selectivity. A laser can place energy on a chosen target with great precision. A broader microwave effect is less naturally selective. Publicly available sources provide little detail about THOR’s exact operational constraints, but military analyses of high-power microwave weapons routinely note concerns involving friendly electronics, safety boundaries and management of electromagnetic effects near protected systems. [Military.com]military.comtop general mideast calls microwave weapons layered defense against drone swarmsTop General in Mideast Calls for Microwave Weapons…11 Mar 2024 — While lasers provide point defense against individual drones, microwa…
Finally, wide beams do not eliminate the need for layered defence. Military discussions increasingly present microwave systems as one layer within a broader counter-drone architecture that may also include sensors, electronic warfare, lasers and conventional interceptors. The wide beam helps solve the saturation problem, but it is not intended to solve every air-defence problem by itself. Why the Wide Beam Matters
THOR’s significance lies in changing the engagement model for drone defence. Instead of asking how quickly a defender can defeat drones one after another, it asks whether a single microwave engagement can influence many drones at once. The wide beam is the mechanism that makes that shift possible. Public tests suggest that this approach can be effective against concentrated drone swarms, which is why high-power microwave systems continue to attract attention as a response to saturation attacks. The central promise is not perfect accuracy but improved efficiency: using one electromagnetic engagement area to challenge many small airborne threats simultaneously.
