DragonFires successful drone interceptions have demonstrated that a modern laser air-defence system can track and destroy fast-moving aerial targets. What those trials do not prove is that the weapon will deliver the same performance in heavy rain, sea spray, fog, dust storms or battlefield smoke. For any high-energy laser, the atmosphere is not simply empty space between the weapon and the target. It is part of the engagement itself. Water droplets, dust particles, turbulence and airborne contaminants can absorb, scatter or distort the beam before it reaches the target. A laser weapon damages a target by concentrating energy onto a small area for a sustained period. Several different weather-related mechanisms can degrade a high-energy laser.
Fog and mist are among the most challenging conditions. Tiny suspended water droplets scatter laser energy in multiple directions, reducing the amount that reaches the target.
