Introduction

DragonFires headline achievements can create the impression that a shipboard laser simply points, fires and destroys targets at negligible cost. The reality is more complicated. Like every high-energy laser weapon, DragonFire is constrained by physics as much as by engineering. It can only engage targets that it can see, it must keep its beam accurately focused on a target for long enough to cause damage, and it must transmit that energy through an atmosphere that can absorb, scatter or distort the beam. For a warship, line of sight creates a geometric limitation as well as a technical one. The Earth curves away beneath the horizon, meaning that very low-flying threats can disappear from view until they are relatively close. This matters because many modern threats deliberately exploit geometry. Sea-skimming missiles fly low to reduce detection and engagement time. Small drones can approach through cluttered environments or from angles where structures on a ship temporarily obstruct a firing solution.   • Absorption: Water vapour and atmospheric particles can absorb energy that would otherwise contribute to the target effect.

The Tracking-Time Problem

Unlike many missiles, a laser generally needs a finite dwell time. The beam must remain on the target long enough to heat, weaken or damage a critical component. That requirement introduces another limit.

If a drone is manoeuvring aggressively, rotating, presenting reflective surfaces or briefly disappearing behind clutter, the weapon may need to reacquire and stabilise the beam. The faster and more erratic the target, the harder it becomes to maintain a damaging spot on exactly the right location. Why Lasers Are a Defensive Layer, Not a Missile Replacement

DragonFire’s greatest advantage is not that it replaces existing weapons. It is that it fills a specific niche within a layered defence system.

A laser can engage targets at the speed of light, offers a very low cost per shot compared with missile interceptors, and is particularly attractive against large numbers of relatively inexpensive drones.   • Missiles can engage beyond line of sight; lasers generally cannot.

DragonFire programme leaders have explicitly described directed-energy weapons as complementary to traditional guns and missiles rather than substitutes for them.
