Introduction

High-power microwave (HPM) weapons create one of the most difficult kill-assessment problems in directed-energy warfare. Unlike a laser that may leave a burn mark, structural failure, or visible fire, a microwave attack often targets the electronics that control a drone rather than the airframe itself. A drone can appear physically intact while suffering anything from a momentary software upset to permanent electronic damage. As a result, operators may see abnormal behaviour after a beam hit without immediately knowing whether the threat has been defeated, temporarily disrupted, or will recover and continue its mission. Microwave Check illustration 1 This uncertainty matters most in counter-drone operations, where defenders must decide within seconds whether to engage again, hand the target to another weapon system, or assume the threat has already been neutralised. Microwave effects are often real but difficult to verify because the most important damage may be invisible from the outside. Did the Microwave Stop the Drone for Good?

The central challenge is that microwaves can produce a wide spectrum of electronic effects.

A sufficiently powerful pulse may permanently damage semiconductor components, trigger electrical breakdown, cause destructive latch-up conditions inside integrated circuits, or burn out vulnerable electronics. In these cases, the target may never recover without repair. [OSTI.gov+2ResearchGate]osti.gov1043001 overview hpm effects electronicsOverview of HPM Effects in Electronics (Conference)4 Jun 2012 — The following presentation contains an overview of HPM effects in modern…

However, the same class of weapon can also create non-destructive effects. Electromagnetic energy can interfere with signals inside circuits, overwhelm normal logic states, disrupt processors, or force temporary malfunctions. Once the interference ends, the system may reboot, reset, or resume operation. For an operator watching a drone after engagement, both outcomes can initially look identical. The aircraft may:

  • Deviate from its flight path.
  • Lose stability.
  • Stop responding normally.
  • Enter an automated recovery mode.
  • Momentarily descend before regaining control.
  • Appear frozen or unresponsive.

None of those observations alone proves that permanent damage has occurred. [Office of Naval Research]onr.navy.milOffice of Naval ResearchDirected Energy Weapons: High Power MicrowavesHPM weapons create beams of electromagnetic energy over a broad spe…

What Electronic Disruption Can Look Like

Microwave effects are often described as “counter-electronics” effects because they attack the systems that make a platform function rather than its physical structure. [Epirus]epirusinc.comEpirusEpirus Leonidas High-Power Microwave: Directed Energy…Leonidas is a solid-state, high-power HPM system, utilizing Gallium Nitrid…

The visible signs can therefore be misleading. A drone that suddenly wobbles, drifts, or loses navigation may simply be experiencing a temporary control upset. Research into microwave interference in electronic circuits shows that high-power microwave energy can force incorrect logic states and operational errors without necessarily destroying the underlying hardware. Recent studies examining unmanned aircraft under high-power electromagnetic exposure have identified failure modes that resemble paralysis of flight-control functions rather than dramatic hardware destruction. In some scenarios, the vehicle may stop executing commands correctly even though major components remain intact. From a kill-assessment perspective, this creates ambiguity. A drone flying erratically might be seconds from crashing, or it might merely be recovering from a transient disturbance.

Temporary Failure Versus Lasting Mission Kill

The hardest question after a microwave engagement is whether the observed effect is reversible.

Technical literature commonly divides microwave effects into damaging and non-damaging categories. Non-damaging effects can interrupt operations without physically destroying components. Damaging effects can include junction breakdown, dielectric breakdown, thermal burnout, or latch-up that ultimately renders electronics unusable. [OSTI.gov+2PMC]osti.gov1043001 overview hpm effects electronicsOverview of HPM Effects in Electronics (Conference)4 Jun 2012 — The following presentation contains an overview of HPM effects in modern…

The distinction is operationally critical.

A temporary upset may:

  • Cause a reboot.
  • Interrupt navigation for a few seconds.
  • Corrupt sensor outputs.
  • Force an automated safety mode.

A permanent effect may:

  • Destroy processors.
  • Burn out power-management circuitry.
  • Damage communication systems.
  • Disable flight-control electronics beyond recovery. [OSTI.gov+2ResearchGate]osti.gov1043001 overview hpm effects electronicsOverview of HPM Effects in Electronics (Conference)4 Jun 2012 — The following presentation contains an overview of HPM effects in modern…

Unfortunately, external observation rarely reveals which category has occurred. A drone descending after a microwave hit may be crashing because its electronics have failed permanently, or it may simply be rebooting before resuming flight.

That uncertainty is far less common with kinetic interceptors, where destruction is often visible immediately.

Why Swarms and Redundant Electronics Complicate Checks

Modern drones increasingly contain redundant electronics, autonomous behaviours, and fail-safe routines designed to maintain operation despite faults.

This means a microwave strike can successfully damage one subsystem while leaving enough capability for the mission to continue. A drone may lose one sensor, one communication channel, or one processing path yet remain airborne and dangerous. Assessing mission defeat therefore requires more than confirming that some disruption occurred. [Office of Naval Research]onr.navy.milOffice of Naval ResearchDirected Energy Weapons: High Power MicrowavesHPM weapons create beams of electromagnetic energy over a broad spe…

The problem becomes even harder with swarms.

Microwave weapons are attractive because they can affect many drones simultaneously rather than engaging them one by one. Recent demonstrations and military trials have emphasised the ability of HPM systems to disrupt or neutralise large groups of drones in a single engagement. [Epirus+2GOV.UK]epirusinc.comTap to unmute.Read moreEpirusEpirus' Leonidas High-Power Microwave Defeats 49-Drone…10 Sept 2025 — Leonidas neutralized 61-of-61 drones, culminating in a 49…

Yet swarm engagements create a new assessment challenge. If dozens of drones react differently after exposure, operators must determine:

  • Which drones are permanently disabled.
  • Which are temporarily affected.
  • Which remain combat-capable.
  • Whether the swarm’s overall mission has failed.

A few drones falling out of formation may not indicate that the entire threat has been neutralised. Some members of the swarm may recover, while others never do.

Why Behaviour Alone Can Be Deceptive

One reason microwave kill assessment remains difficult is that behaviour is only an indirect indicator of internal electronic condition.

Electronic systems can fail gradually, intermittently, or selectively. Research on microwave-induced effects in semiconductors shows that mechanisms such as latch-up and thermal damage may develop through internal processes that are invisible to outside observers. As a result, a drone may continue flying after sustaining serious electronic damage. Conversely, it may exhibit dramatic instability despite suffering no permanent harm.

This disconnect between appearance and actual system health forces defenders to rely on multiple indicators rather than a single visual cue. Flight path changes, telemetry loss, radar tracking, sensor observations, and continued target behaviour all become part of the assessment process.

The Risk of Declaring Success Too Early

For microwave weapons, the greatest assessment risk is not failing to detect an effect. It is misjudging the permanence of that effect.

Official descriptions of HPM technology frequently note that microwave energy can cause either damage or temporary disruption. From an operational standpoint, those are very different outcomes even if they look similar immediately after engagement. [Office of Naval Research]onr.navy.milOffice of Naval ResearchDirected Energy Weapons: High Power MicrowavesHPM weapons create beams of electromagnetic energy over a broad spe…

A defender who assumes a disrupted drone has been permanently defeated may allow a still-functional threat to continue toward a protected asset. Conversely, treating every disrupted drone as an active threat can consume additional defensive resources unnecessarily.

This is why microwave kill assessment is often more difficult than laser kill assessment. The decisive evidence is frequently hidden inside processors, power systems, and electronic circuits rather than visible on the target’s exterior. Until the target crashes, departs, or clearly loses mission capability, uncertainty can remain even after a successful beam hit.
