Introduction

High-power microwave air-defence systems are attractive because they can disable multiple drones at once by attacking electronics rather than physically destroying each target. The same characteristic, however, creates one of the technology’s hardest operational problems: a microwave pulse does not inherently know which electronics belong to the enemy and which belong to friendly forces. A laser can often be directed at a single drone with limited effects outside the aim point. A microwave weapon may create effects across a wider volume of space, raising the possibility of interference with friendly radios, sensors, aircraft systems, autonomous vehicles or civilian electronics nearby. This “electromagnetic fratricide” risk is not a side issue. For many operators, it is one of the main factors that determines when, where and whether a microwave air-defence system can be fired at all. What Makes Microwave Defences Different?

The core mechanism is straightforward. High-power microwave (HPM) systems emit intense radio-frequency energy designed to couple into electronic systems and produce disruption, malfunction or permanent damage. Rather than heating a single physical spot, they seek to overwhelm sensitive electronics. That creates a useful military effect against drone swarms because many drones rely on broadly similar electronic components: processors, flight controllers, power-management systems, sensors and communications equipment. A sufficiently strong microwave pulse may affect several targets during the same engagement. Tests and demonstrations of modern HPM systems have repeatedly emphasised their ability to engage many drones simultaneously rather than one at a time. The difficulty is that the beam interacts with electronics, not with legal or tactical categories. If a friendly system presents a vulnerable electronic pathway within the affected area, it may experience some level of interference as well. The US Government Accountability Office has specifically identified wider-beam directed-energy systems as creating a battlefield challenge because they can affect assets in an area “whether friend or foe”. Why Area Effects Create Discrimination Problems

Microwave air defence is often described as a “one-to-many” weapon. That phrase highlights both its strength and its weakness.

A laser operator can generally choose a single drone and place energy on that object alone. A microwave operator instead manages an electromagnetic effect volume. The larger and broader that effect volume becomes, the greater the chance that unintended electronics fall inside it. [The War Zone]twz.comThe War ZoneMarines Get Their First High Power Microwave Weapon…29 Apr 2025 — A wide beam means HPM weapons have greater potential to…

Several factors complicate discrimination:

  • Shared electronic vulnerabilities. Friendly drones and hostile drones may use similar commercial components, making selective electronic effects difficult.
  • Dense electromagnetic environments. Modern military forces depend on radios, data links, GPS receivers, sensors and networked systems that may operate near the engagement area.
  • Uncertain coupling paths. Microwave energy can enter equipment through antennas, cables, apertures and other unintended routes, making exact outcomes difficult to predict.
  • Rapid engagement timelines. Counter-drone engagements often occur with little warning, reducing the time available to assess collateral electronic effects. As a result, microwave air-defence commanders are not only asking whether they can disable the incoming drones. They are also asking whether they can do so without disrupting their own force’s communications, sensors or autonomous systems at the same moment.

Which Friendly Systems Most Influence Firing Rules?

In practice, firing restrictions are often shaped less by the hostile drone than by the friendly equipment nearby.

Friendly Aircraft and Drones

Friendly unmanned aircraft are among the most obvious concerns. Modern battlefields increasingly contain reconnaissance drones, loitering systems, logistics drones and autonomous sensors operating simultaneously. A microwave pulse intended for hostile aircraft may also threaten friendly unmanned platforms occupying the same airspace. [GAO]gao.govgao 23 106717Science & Tech Spotlight: Directed Energy Weapons25 May 2023 — For example, wider beam DEWs, such as high power microwave or millimete…Published: May 2023

This issue becomes more important as militaries adopt large numbers of inexpensive drones. A force that relies heavily on its own unmanned systems may be reluctant to fire a wide-area microwave effect through airspace crowded with friendly aircraft.

Communications and Networking Equipment

Military operations depend on radios and digital networks. Even temporary disruption can degrade command-and-control functions, delay targeting information or interrupt coordination between units.

Because microwave weapons are fundamentally electromagnetic systems, planners must consider how friendly communications infrastructure is arranged around the defended site. Air bases, headquarters and naval vessels often contain dense concentrations of electronic equipment, increasing the need for careful firing doctrine. Air-Defence Sensors

Counter-drone operations rely heavily on radar, electro-optical sensors and tracking systems. Ironically, the same defended location may contain the sensors needed to detect the threat and the microwave weapon intended to defeat it.

Protecting those sensors can become a significant design and operational challenge, especially when multiple electronic systems operate in close proximity.

Civilian Infrastructure

Many likely deployment locations are near airports, ports, industrial facilities or urban areas. Civilian communications equipment, transportation systems and commercial electronics may therefore influence engagement rules.

The concern is not that every microwave engagement automatically damages nearby consumer devices. Rather, commanders must account for the possibility of unintended effects when operating in electronically dense environments. This consideration helps explain why testing, modelling and range safety procedures receive substantial attention during HPM development programmes. How Shielding and Exclusion Zones Change Deployment

The response to electronic-fratricide risk is not simply to avoid microwave weapons. Instead, developers and operators attempt to manage the risk through engineering controls and operational procedures.

Hardening Friendly Systems

One approach is to make friendly equipment more resistant to electromagnetic energy. Shielding, filtering, protected cabling and hardened electronics can reduce susceptibility to microwave effects. Similar protection concepts have long existed in electromagnetic compatibility and electromagnetic pulse protection work. [NATO Publications]publications.sto.nato.intmore…

The more robust friendly systems become, the more freedom commanders gain to employ microwave defences.

Creating Exclusion Zones

Another approach is geographical separation. Operators can establish areas where friendly aircraft, vehicles or communications systems must not be present during engagement.

This method resembles safety zones around artillery or missile launches, except the hazard being managed is electromagnetic rather than explosive. The practical consequence is that microwave weapons may require carefully managed operating areas rather than unrestricted use across the entire battlespace.

Software-Defined Restrictions

Recent HPM developers increasingly describe software controls intended to reduce collateral electronic effects. Public statements about the Leonidas microwave system, for example, refer to software-defined safe zones, exclusion of friendly bands and other controls intended to reduce electromagnetic fratricide risks. [Epirus+2Army Recognition]epirusinc.comEpirusEpirus Leonidas High-Power Microwave: Directed Energy…Low voltages, zero ionizing radiation, and software-controlled safe zones…

These measures are important because they recognise a central reality: microwave air defence becomes much more useful when it can be integrated into a friendly electronic ecosystem rather than treated as an isolated weapon.

The Trade-Off That Shapes Microwave Air Defence

The electronics-risk problem is not an accidental flaw in microwave air defence. It emerges directly from the feature that makes the technology attractive.

A wider-area microwave effect can engage multiple drones rapidly, making it potentially valuable against saturation attacks and large swarms. Yet the same broad interaction with electronics creates discrimination challenges that precision laser systems largely avoid. The more a force values area coverage and mass engagement, the more it must invest in shielding, operational controls, exclusion zones and electronic coordination. [The War Zone+2GAO]twz.comThe War ZoneMarines Get Their First High Power Microwave Weapon…29 Apr 2025 — A wide beam means HPM weapons have greater potential to…

This trade-off explains why microwave systems are often discussed as a complement to lasers rather than a replacement. Lasers minimise collateral electronic effects but engage targets individually. Microwaves can influence many targets at once but require careful management of nearby friendly systems. In air defence, the question is therefore not merely whether a microwave beam can stop hostile drones. It is what else may be inside the beam when it does.
