Why Dragon Fire Is Going to a Type 45
The Type 45 is the first public DragonFire ship fit because its air-defence mission, sensors and electric architecture make it the most plausible host.

Introduction
DragonFire is being introduced first on the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers because that class already performs the mission most closely aligned with a shipborne laser weapon. The Type 45 was designed as the fleet’s specialist air-defence platform, equipped to detect, track and defeat aircraft, missiles and increasingly drones. A laser intended to provide a low-cost, high-volume layer of defence against aerial threats fits naturally into that role. At the same time, the destroyer’s electric architecture, powerful sensors and ongoing power-system upgrades make it one of the few existing Royal Navy platforms with a realistic path to integrating a high-energy laser into frontline operations. The decision therefore reflects both operational logic and engineering practicality rather than a simple desire to place new technology on the largest available warship. Air-Defence Mission Fit
The strongest reason for selecting the Type 45 is that DragonFire is intended to strengthen a mission the ship already performs. The Daring-class destroyers were built primarily for anti-air warfare and missile defence. Their purpose is to protect carrier groups, amphibious forces and merchant shipping from airborne threats, using the Sea Viper weapon system and the Sampson radar. The Royal Navy describes the class as a fleet shield against air attack. [Wikipedia]WikipediaType 45 destroyerType 45 destroyer
DragonFire addresses a growing problem within that mission. Modern naval forces increasingly face large numbers of relatively inexpensive drones alongside more traditional missile threats. Destroying every drone with a sophisticated interceptor missile can be effective, but it is expensive and consumes limited missile inventories. DragonFire offers a complementary defensive layer that can engage suitable targets at a much lower cost per shot while preserving missile stocks for more demanding threats. Recent Ministry of Defence statements have repeatedly linked the laser programme to counter-drone defence and the need for more economical protection against aerial attacks. Just as importantly, the Type 45 already possesses the sensor and combat-management infrastructure needed to identify and track airborne targets. A laser weapon is only as useful as the targeting information it receives. Because the destroyer was designed around sophisticated air-defence radars and engagement systems, it provides a more mature integration environment than a ship whose primary role is anti-submarine warfare, patrol duties or amphibious support. Electric Propulsion and Ship Power
A second major factor is the Type 45’s electrical architecture. High-energy lasers do not consume ammunition in the traditional sense; instead, they depend on a reliable supply of electrical power and effective cooling. That makes power generation and distribution central to platform selection.
The Type 45 was one of the first major combatants designed around an integrated electric propulsion concept. Its propulsion and ship systems are fed from a common electrical generation network managed through a dedicated electric power-management architecture. This design provides greater flexibility for distributing electrical energy around the ship than many older mechanically driven warships. Although DragonFire’s exact naval power requirements have not been publicly detailed, defence analysts have consistently pointed to the destroyer’s available electrical capacity as one of the reasons it is viewed as the most suitable early host platform. Commentary surrounding the programme has highlighted that post-upgrade Type 45 destroyers possess sufficient spare generation capacity to support a laser in the DragonFire class. The class has also undergone the Power Improvement Project (PIP), a major programme intended to strengthen reliability and electrical generation capability after well-publicised propulsion problems. While that project was not created specifically for directed-energy weapons, it has improved the platform’s ability to support demanding future systems. In practical terms, a warship receiving significant investment in electrical resilience is a more attractive candidate for laser integration than one approaching the limits of its existing power infrastructure. Why Older Warships Are Less Suitable
Choosing the Type 45 also reflects the limitations of alternative platforms.
Older Royal Navy surface combatants were generally designed before naval laser weapons became a realistic operational prospect. Their power-generation systems were optimised for propulsion, sensors and weapons already in service rather than future high-energy directed-energy systems. Retrofitting a laser onto such vessels could require extensive modifications to electrical distribution, cooling arrangements and combat-system interfaces. The technical effort and cost may outweigh the benefits, particularly for ships approaching the latter stages of their service lives. [GE Vernova]gevernova.comGE Vernova Type 45 DestroyerGE VernovaType 45 Destroyer - Daring Class World's First Full Electric…18 Jan 2022 — The power and propulsion system is operated from…
Mission alignment matters as well. A laser weapon intended primarily for counter-air and counter-drone defence delivers the greatest value on a ship whose primary responsibility is already air defence. Installing DragonFire first on a platform dedicated to that role allows the Royal Navy to evaluate how the weapon complements missile systems, radar networks and engagement procedures in the environment where it is most likely to be used. [Wikipedia]WikipediaType 45 destroyerType 45 destroyer
There is also an operational urgency unique to the Type 45. Recent deployments have repeatedly placed these destroyers in environments where drones and missiles are central threats. The class has become the Royal Navy’s principal asset for defending naval forces and wider interests against increasingly complex aerial attacks. Adding a laser weapon therefore addresses a real operational requirement rather than serving as a purely experimental technology demonstration. Why the Choice Makes Sense
The decision to place DragonFire on a Type 45 destroyer is best understood as the intersection of mission need, sensor capability and electrical capacity. The destroyer already specialises in defeating airborne threats, already carries the radar and combat systems needed to support laser engagements, and already possesses an electrical architecture better suited to powering a directed-energy weapon than most legacy platforms. As a result, the Type 45 represents the Royal Navy’s most credible first step from laser experimentation to operational naval deployment.
