Introduction
The USS Preble HELIOS test is one of the most important public data points in the modern history of naval directed-energy weapons because it moved the discussion beyond laboratory demonstrations and into an operational destroyer environment. What the public record confirms is relatively narrow but still significant: the Navy used the HELIOS laser aboard the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Preble against an unmanned aerial vehicle target and reported that the system successfully demonstrated its intended capability. What remains unknown is almost as important as what was revealed. Why the Missing Details Matter
