Introduction
A laser can score a direct hit on a drone and still fail to destroy it. The reason is that laser lethality depends not merely on striking the target, but on keeping a highly concentrated beam fixed on a very small vulnerable point for long enough to generate damaging heat. Even slight tracking errors can prevent this from happening. The challenge is made harder because the most valuable aim points on a drone are often tiny.

These components occupy only a small fraction of the visible target area. A tracking system must therefore do more than keep the beam on the drone. It must keep the beam on the right part of the drone.
This distinction is crucial. A beam that remains somewhere on the airframe may appear to be tracking successfully while still failing to generate a kill. If the laser repeatedly drifts from a battery enclosure to surrounding structure, or from a rotor root to a nearby panel, heat is deposited into less vulnerable material and the engagement becomes less effective. Tracking performance is not a linear problem. A slight increase in pointing error can produce a disproportionately large reduction in damage.
