DragonFire could give commanders a cheaper short-range option for drones while preserving Sea Viper missiles for more dangerous threats.

Introduction
A Type 45 destroyer equipped with DragonFire would not replace its existing missile defences. Instead, it would change how commanders decide which weapon to use against which threat. Modern naval air defence is increasingly shaped by the need to defeat large numbers of inexpensive drones without exhausting limited stocks of expensive missiles. DragonFire gives a Type 45 a new option between simply tracking a target and firing a missile: a highly precise laser engagement costing roughly £10 per shot. That changes the economics and tactics of defence, particularly against drones and other lower-end aerial threats. For a ship already centred on the Sea Viper air-defence system, the key effect is not that lasers replace missiles, but that commanders gain greater flexibility in preserving missile inventory for the threats that genuinely require it. Choosing Lasers or Missiles
The most important combat decision aboard a Type 45 is weapon allocation. Every incoming contact must be assessed according to danger, range, speed, manoeuvrability and the wider tactical situation.
Before DragonFire, the ship’s choices against aerial threats were largely limited to missiles and guns. With DragonFire installed, commanders gain an additional engagement layer that sits between those options.
In broad terms, the decision logic changes as follows:
- DragonFire becomes attractive for relatively cheap, numerous or expendable targets, especially drones.
- Sea Viper missiles remain the preferred choice for high-performance aircraft, complex missile threats and targets requiring engagement at much greater distances.
- Guns and close-range systems remain relevant as a final defensive layer if earlier engagements fail.
This matters because missile stocks are finite. A destroyer can reload only in port, whereas a laser primarily depends on electrical power generation and thermal management. In a prolonged operation, preserving missiles may be as important as destroying individual targets. Recent Royal Navy operations in the Red Sea highlighted the value of missile-based air defence against serious threats. Counter-Drone Engagements at Close Range
The clearest change in combat decisions comes during drone attacks.
Many modern drones are far cheaper than the missiles used to destroy them. This creates an unfavourable exchange ratio for defenders. An attacker can launch multiple low-cost systems while forcing a defender to spend large sums on interceptors. DragonFire was developed specifically to help address this problem. For a Type 45 commander, the arrival of a small drone inside the laser’s effective engagement envelope creates a different decision tree:
- Detect and classify the target using the ship’s sensors.
- Determine whether the target can be safely engaged by DragonFire.
- Reserve Sea Viper interceptors for more demanding threats.
- Escalate to missile engagement only if the laser cannot achieve a kill or if the threat profile changes.
This approach is especially valuable during saturation attacks. A commander facing multiple drones may decide that laser engagements provide a more sustainable defensive response while retaining missile capacity for any accompanying anti-ship missiles or aircraft. Trials have demonstrated DragonFire’s ability to destroy aerial drones, including high-speed targets. Those results are significant because they show that the weapon is intended not merely as a demonstration system but as a practical counter-drone tool integrated into naval air defence planning. Why Threat Prioritisation Becomes More Important
Adding a laser does not simplify combat decisions; in some ways it makes them more complex.
A Type 45 commander must decide not only whether to engage a target, but also whether the target is worth a missile. This requires continuous prioritisation across multiple tracks.
For example, a ship might simultaneously detect:
- Several reconnaissance drones.
- One-way attack drones.
- A suspected anti-ship missile.
- Aircraft operating at longer range.
In such a scenario, DragonFire allows lower-priority threats to be handled without automatically consuming missile inventory. The result is a more nuanced allocation of defensive resources. This is particularly relevant because Type 45 destroyers are often deployed as escorts for carrier groups, amphibious forces or merchant shipping. Their role is not simply self-defence but protecting other vessels. Preserving high-end interceptors for the most dangerous threats strengthens that wider mission. What Layered Defence Still Needs
DragonFire does not eliminate the need for Sea Viper or other defensive systems.
Laser weapons depend on line of sight and sustained beam contact with a target. They also remain affected by operational factors such as weather, atmospheric conditions and engagement geometry. As a result, commanders cannot assume that every target can be dealt with by a laser alone. [Tom's Hardware]tomshardware.comA $413 million (£316 million) contract has been awarded to MBDA UK to deploy DragonFire on the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers starting i…
For that reason, DragonFire is generally described as part of a layered defence architecture rather than a replacement for kinetic weapons. The laser adds another engagement option, but missiles remain essential for longer-range interceptions, difficult manoeuvring targets and situations where a rapid kill probability is required at greater distance. [MBDA Systems]mbda-systems.comuk defence minister visits mbda dragonfire laser weapon contract announcementMBDA SystemsUK Defence Minister visits MBDA for DRAGONFIRE laser…15 Dec 2025 — Laser weapons are most effective in a layered Air Defen…
The practical outcome is that a future Type 45 commander will likely think in terms of defensive layers:
- Laser first where conditions and target type make it efficient.
- Missiles for high-value or high-performance threats.
- Close-range systems and guns as a final safeguard.
The Real Operational Shift
The most significant effect of DragonFire is not technological but operational. It changes the cost-benefit calculation behind every engagement decision.
A commander no longer faces a simple choice between firing an expensive missile or accepting risk. Instead, DragonFire introduces a low-cost, rapidly reusable defensive option that can absorb part of the counter-drone burden. That makes missile inventories last longer, improves resilience during extended deployments and strengthens the Type 45’s ability to protect task groups during sustained periods of aerial threat. In practical terms, a Type 45 fitted with DragonFire remains a missile destroyer. The difference is that it gains a new way to decide when a missile is truly necessary.
