Introduction

A laser weapon’s quoted range is usually a clear-weather figure. In fog, mist, or sea spray, the atmosphere itself begins to steal energy from the beam before it reaches the target. The problem is not simply visibility. High-energy lasers rely on delivering a concentrated amount of light onto a very small spot for long enough to heat, weaken, or damage a drone, missile, or other target. When that light encounters millions of suspended water droplets, part of the beam is scattered away from the aiming point, reducing the energy that arrives on target. In severe conditions, the loss can be large enough that a successful engagement at one range in clear air becomes impossible at the same range in fog or heavy marine haze. How Droplets Scatter Laser Light

Fog is made of microscopic water droplets suspended in air. These droplets are often similar in size to the wavelengths used by many military and industrial laser systems. Under those conditions, a physical process known as Mie scattering becomes dominant. Instead of travelling in a straight path, portions of the laser beam are redirected in many directions by the droplets. For a laser weapon, every scattered photon is energy that no longer contributes to heating the target. The effect accumulates continuously along the beam path:

  • Some energy is scattered sideways.
  • Some is scattered back toward the source.
  • Some is absorbed and converted into heat within droplets.
  • Multiple scattering events further diffuse the beam.

The result is a reduction in beam intensity and a widening of the effective spot size at the target. A beam that begins tightly focused can arrive weaker and less concentrated than intended. Research on laser transmission through fog consistently finds that attenuation depends on droplet concentration, droplet size distribution, and visibility conditions. Dense fog can impose severe transmission losses over relatively short distances, dramatically reducing the useful range of optical systems. An important misconception is that simply moving to a longer infrared wavelength completely solves the problem. Studies of dense fog show that while wavelength choice matters, heavy fog remains a difficult propagation environment across much of the visible and infrared spectrum because the droplets themselves remain effective scatterers. Why Marine Air Is Especially Difficult

Naval laser systems face a harsher atmosphere than many land-based systems because the marine boundary layer contains more than just water vapour. Wind-driven waves constantly inject sea-salt aerosols and spray droplets into the air. These particles add another source of optical scattering and attenuation. [American Meteorological Society Journals+2tos.org]journals.ametsoc.orgDespite evidence of the importance of surface…Read more…

The challenge is particularly important because air over the sea can appear relatively clear to human observers while still containing enough aerosol content to affect laser propagation. Military and naval atmospheric studies therefore devote significant effort to modelling marine aerosols, their interaction with turbulence, and their effect on high-energy laser transmission. [Navy SBIR+2American Meteorological Society Journals]navysbir.comyer for the integration of propagation modeling software…

Several factors combine in maritime environments:

Sea spray aerosols. Breaking waves generate salt particles and tiny droplets that scatter light.

High humidity. Moist air encourages growth of aerosol particles, making them more effective at interacting with laser wavelengths.

Marine haze. Fine droplets can remain suspended even when visibility seems acceptable.

Surface-layer turbulence. Temperature and humidity gradients above the ocean can distort beam propagation in addition to scattering losses. This combination explains why naval directed-energy programmes treat atmospheric propagation as a major engineering problem rather than a secondary operational consideration. A laser that performs well on a dry test range may encounter substantially different conditions above a warm, humid sea. Why Reduced Energy Matters More Than Reduced Visibility

A laser weapon does not defeat a target merely by touching it with light. It must deposit enough energy into a specific area to create thermal damage. This requirement creates a threshold effect.

If atmospheric losses reduce delivered energy by a modest amount, the laser may still work but require more time on target. If losses become severe, the beam may never reach the damage threshold regardless of how accurately it is aimed. This is why fog affects laser weapons differently from conventional optical sensors. A camera can often function with a degraded image. A laser weapon, by contrast, depends on maintaining energy density. Once scattering lowers that density below a critical level, effectiveness can collapse rapidly rather than gradually. What Longer Dwell Time Means in Defence

When atmospheric losses increase, operators may compensate by holding the beam on the target for longer. This additional exposure time is known as increased dwell time.

In theory, a longer dwell allows the laser to accumulate enough thermal damage despite reduced power reaching the target. In practice, longer dwell times introduce several operational penalties:

  • Fast-moving drones have more time to manoeuvre.
  • Tracking systems must maintain precise aim for longer.
  • Multiple simultaneous threats become harder to engage.
  • Targets may leave the effective engagement envelope before damage occurs.

As a result, atmospheric attenuation does not merely reduce maximum range. It can reduce the number of targets a system can handle and shrink the practical window for a successful intercept. Why Fog Remains a Persistent Limitation

The significance of fog and sea spray is illustrated by the amount of research devoted to overcoming them. Experimental work has investigated methods such as using extremely intense pulsed lasers to clear temporary channels through fog or disperse droplets from the beam path. These studies demonstrate that researchers regard atmospheric droplet scattering as a fundamental obstacle to long-range laser transmission. [arXiv+2arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv High repetition rate ultrashort laser cuts a path through fogHigh repetition rate ultrashort laser cuts a path through fogDecember 25, 2016…Published: December 25, 2016

For air-defence lasers, the central lesson is straightforward: range is not determined only by laser power and target size. It is also determined by the atmosphere between the weapon and the target. Fog, mist, and sea spray place millions of tiny scatterers in that path, bleeding away energy and forcing the laser to work harder. In maritime environments, where aerosols, humidity, and spray are persistent features of the air, this atmospheric penalty can become one of the defining limits on real-world laser performance. tos.org+3Wiley Online Library+3American Meteorological Society Journals [onlinelibrary.wiley.com]onlinelibrary.wiley.comWiley Online LibraryThe Multiple Scattering of Laser Beam Propagation in…10 Jan 2023 — For different density and droplets distribution…
