Introduction
DragonFire’s ability to destroy drones and other aerial threats depends on delivering a tightly focused beam through the atmosphere to a visible target. At sea, that requirement becomes far more demanding than it appears in controlled demonstrations. Fog, mist, salt-laden spray and humid marine air can all reduce the amount of laser energy that reaches a target and can distort the beam before it arrives. The result is not simply a shorter maximum range. A target may require longer exposure, tracking becomes more difficult, and the probability of a successful engagement can fall even when the target remains visible to sensors. For a naval laser, bad weather is therefore not just an inconvenience but a direct limitation on combat effectiveness. Why Water Droplets Scatter and Absorb Beam Energy
A high-energy laser works best when travelling through relatively clear air. Fog and sea spray fill that air with countless suspended water droplets. Each droplet can scatter part of the beam away from its intended path and absorb a fraction of the energy that would otherwise be concentrated on the target. The key problem is that a laser weapon relies on concentrating energy into an extremely small spot. If atmospheric particles spread that energy over a wider area, the target receives less heat per square centimetre. Even modest losses can matter because laser damage depends on maintaining sufficient energy density to burn, melt or structurally weaken the target. Dense fog is especially challenging because droplet sizes are often comparable to the wavelengths used by many laser systems. Under these conditions, scattering becomes highly effective. Studies of laser propagation in dense fog have found substantial attenuation across visible and infrared wavelengths, with some dense fog conditions causing severe transmission losses even at wavelengths traditionally considered favourable for laser systems. Sea spray introduces an additional complication. Unlike pure fog droplets, marine aerosols contain salt particles and varying droplet sizes generated by breaking waves and strong winds. Naval research programmes specifically study marine aerosol boundary layers because salt aerosols can alter both scattering and absorption characteristics and interact with atmospheric turbulence in ways that degrade laser propagation. Why Naval Air Is Harder Than a Dry Test Range
A laser demonstration on a clear range and a laser engagement over the sea can present very different atmospheric environments.
The air immediately above the ocean is known as the marine boundary layer. It is often characterised by high humidity, rapidly changing temperature gradients, suspended salt particles and local turbulence generated by the interaction between sea and air. These conditions are important enough that dedicated military modelling tools have been developed to estimate how they affect ship-defence laser performance. Marine air can degrade a beam in several overlapping ways:
- Humidity and water vapour absorb some laser energy.
- Salt aerosols and spray droplets scatter light out of the beam path.
- Temperature variations distort the beam through refractive effects.
- Wind-driven spray can rapidly change atmospheric conditions from one moment to the next. [Navy SBIR+2American Meteorological Society Journals]navysbir.comyer for the integration of propagation modeling software…
The challenge is not merely a reduction in raw power. DragonFire must keep a highly concentrated spot on a moving target while the target moves, the ship moves and the atmosphere itself changes between the two. Leonardo, one of the programme partners, highlights atmospheric interference as a core beam-control challenge alongside target and platform motion. [Leonardo]uk.leonardo.comDragon Fire – Laser Directed Energy WeaponDragonFire – Laser Directed Energy Weapon - Leonardo UKthe platform carrying the laser system is moving and there is atmospheric…
This is why naval lasers are frequently described as weather-sensitive systems. Even advocates of directed-energy weapons generally acknowledge that atmospheric conditions near the sea surface are among the most difficult environments for laser propagation. How Range, Dwell Time and Shot Quality Change Together
A common misconception is that bad weather simply reduces the maximum range of a laser weapon. In practice, several performance measures deteriorate simultaneously.
First, less energy reaches the target. A target that might be damaged quickly in clear conditions may require a longer period of illumination in fog or spray. This longer exposure requirement is often called increased dwell time. [Every CRS Report]everycrsreport.comEvery CRS ReportUntitled… effects of atmospheric turbulence. Even so, lasers might not work well, or at all, in rain or fog, preventing…
Second, beam quality declines. Scattering and atmospheric distortion can enlarge the spot size on the target, reducing heating effectiveness even if total transmitted power remains substantial. The laser may still hit the target but with a less concentrated energy distribution. [ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearchGate(PDF) Wavelength and altitude dependence of laser beam…13 Jan 2015 — Our results show that an atmospheric attenuation in s…
Third, tracking becomes more demanding. If a drone or missile is manoeuvring while the beam requires a longer dwell time, maintaining precise aim becomes harder. Small tracking errors that would be acceptable during a short engagement can become critical when the laser must remain fixed on a vulnerable point for longer. [Leonardo]uk.leonardo.comDragon Fire – Laser Directed Energy WeaponDragonFire – Laser Directed Energy Weapon - Leonardo UKthe platform carrying the laser system is moving and there is atmospheric…
The combined effect means that a reduction in atmospheric transmission can create a disproportionate reduction in practical engagement performance. A target may remain detectable and technically within line of sight, yet still become a much harder kill because energy delivery, beam focus and tracking margins all degrade together. [Every CRS Report+2laserwars.net]everycrsreport.comEvery CRS ReportUntitled… effects of atmospheric turbulence. Even so, lasers might not work well, or at all, in rain or fog, preventing…
Why Fog Can Become a Tactical Problem
The Ministry of Defence describes DragonFire as a line-of-sight weapon capable of engaging visible targets. That formulation is important because visibility itself becomes part of the weapon’s effectiveness envelope. [GOV.UK]GOV.UKadvanced future military laser achieves uk first19 Jan 2024 — The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line-of-sight weapon and can engage with any visible target. Laser boast…
Heavy maritime fog can reduce optical visibility and simultaneously weaken laser propagation. This creates a double penalty. The target becomes harder to observe, and the beam that must reach it becomes less effective. Congressional Research Service assessments of naval laser weapons note that rain and fog can reduce effectiveness to the point where lasers should not be regarded as all-weather systems. [Every CRS Report]everycrsreport.comEvery CRS ReportUntitled… effects of atmospheric turbulence. Even so, lasers might not work well, or at all, in rain or fog, preventing…
For naval planners, this does not mean DragonFire becomes useless in poor weather. Rather, it reinforces the logic of layered defence. Missiles, guns and lasers each perform differently under changing environmental conditions. A laser may be highly attractive against drones in clear weather because of its low shot cost and deep magazine, but commanders still require conventional weapons when atmospheric conditions become unfavourable. The Practical Risk for DragonFire at Sea
The most important takeaway is that fog and sea spray do not merely trim a few percentage points from laser performance. They attack the fundamental requirement of any high-energy laser weapon: delivering concentrated energy through the atmosphere.
Water droplets scatter and absorb energy. Marine aerosols introduce additional losses. Humid, turbulent air can distort the beam. Together these effects reduce effective range, increase required dwell time and lower shot quality. Because DragonFire is intended for naval use, it must operate in precisely the environment where these challenges are most persistent. As a result, the practical reach of DragonFire is not defined solely by laser power or classified range figures. It is also defined by the state of the atmosphere between the ship and the target. On a clear day the system may exploit much more of its potential; in fog, mist or heavy spray, the same target can effectively become farther away even when the measured distance remains unchanged.
