Why Lasers Cannot Shoot Past the Horizon

A laser cannot hit what it cannot see, so sea-skimming threats can compress the time a ship has to detect, track and damage them.

Introduction

A shipboard laser such as DragonFire can only damage a target if the beam has a direct optical path to it. That makes geometry as important as laser power. Even a highly accurate laser cannot shoot through the Earth’s curvature, around islands, or below the horizon. For naval defence, this creates a fundamental constraint: low-flying threats may remain physically hidden until they are relatively close to the ship, reducing the time available to detect, track and inflict enough damage to stop them. The Ministry of Defence explicitly describes DragonFire as a line-of-sight weapon that can engage visible targets, highlighting that visibility is not merely helpful but essential to its operation. Horizon Limit illustration 1 This limitation is particularly important against sea-skimming missiles and low-flying drones, which are designed to exploit the horizon. While sensors, aircraft and networked systems can help reveal threats earlier, the laser beam itself still requires an unobstructed path from weapon to target. How Earth’s Curvature Hides Low-Flying Threats

The horizon is not just a visual phenomenon; it is a physical limit created by the Earth’s curvature. Electromagnetic energy travelling in straight lines, whether visible light or most radar signals, eventually intersects the curved surface of the planet. Objects below that line cannot be directly seen from the ship. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOver-the-horizon radarOver-the-horizon radar

For a warship, the height of the sensor or weapon above the sea determines how far away the horizon lies. A laser mounted roughly 10 metres above the waterline has a geometric horizon of only about 11 kilometres. A low-flying target may become visible somewhat farther away because it also has height above the surface, but the engagement zone remains far shorter than the ranges associated with many missiles. [navalgazing.net]navalgazing.netLasers at Sea Part 218 Aug 2021 — A typical naval laser might be mounted 10m above the waterline, giving a distance to the horizon of about 11.3 km. This is…

The result is a simple but unforgiving rule: if a threat is hidden behind the horizon, the laser cannot engage it regardless of beam quality, accuracy or available power. Unlike a missile interceptor, which can be launched toward a predicted intercept point beyond direct visual contact, a laser must maintain an uninterrupted beam path throughout the engagement. Why Sea-Skimming Missiles Shrink Engagement Windows

Modern anti-ship missiles often fly just a few metres above the sea surface during the final phase of attack. This tactic is intended specifically to exploit the radar and optical horizon, delaying detection until the missile is much closer to its target. [cimsec.org+2Instagram]cimsec.orgHow the Fleet Forgot to Fight, Pt3: Tactics and DoctrineOct 1, 2018 — The distance from the average warship's radar and the horizon is barely under 20 miles.10. For decad…

For conventional naval air defence, late detection is already a challenge. For lasers, it creates an additional problem. A laser generally needs more than a momentary hit. The beam must remain accurately focused on the target long enough to heat, weaken or destroy critical components. Every second lost because the target was hidden behind the horizon is a second removed from the potential damage period. [Leonardo]uk.leonardo.comDragon Fire – Laser Directed Energy WeaponDragonFire – Laser Directed Energy Weapon - Leonardo UKThe DragonFire laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) system achieved the UK'…

The compression of engagement time becomes especially severe against fast threats. Analysts discussing naval laser defence have noted that horizon limitations can reduce available engagement opportunities against supersonic sea-skimming missiles to mere tens of seconds. Even if the laser acquires the target immediately after it appears, the weapon must still track, maintain beam quality and achieve the required effect before impact. This is one reason why naval planners generally view lasers as an additional defensive layer rather than a complete replacement for missiles. Missiles can be launched against threats at much greater distances, whereas the laser is often reserved for targets that have already entered the ship’s direct line of sight. Where Sensors Help and Where Beam Geometry Still Wins

Modern warships are not limited to what a sailor can see from the bridge. They may receive information from helicopters, maritime patrol aircraft, satellites, airborne early-warning platforms and other ships. These networks can reveal a threat long before it crosses the horizon of the defended vessel. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOver-the-horizon radarOver-the-horizon radar

However, early warning does not eliminate the laser’s geometric constraint. Knowing that a missile exists is not the same as being able to fire a laser at it. The ship may receive tracking data from an external sensor hundreds of kilometres away, yet the beam still cannot reach a target hidden by curvature. The laser engagement can begin only when the target itself rises above the local horizon and enters a direct optical path. [GOV.UK+2Wikipedia]GOV.UKAdvanced future military laser achieves UK firstJanuary 19, 2024 — 19 Jan 2024 — The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line…Published: January 19, 2024

This distinction explains why advanced sensor networks and directed-energy weapons complement rather than replace each other. External sensors can maximise warning time, allowing the crew to prepare the laser and cue its tracking system. But once the moment of engagement arrives, geometry reasserts itself. The beam can only travel where line of sight exists. Why the Horizon Remains a Permanent Limitation

Future lasers may become more powerful, more efficient and more accurate. They may track faster targets and inflict damage more quickly than current systems. None of those improvements changes the fact that a shipboard laser is fundamentally a line-of-sight weapon. [GOV.UK+2Forces News]GOV.UKAdvanced future military laser achieves UK firstJanuary 19, 2024 — 19 Jan 2024 — The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line…Published: January 19, 2024

The horizon therefore remains one of the most important constraints on naval laser defence. It is not a temporary engineering problem waiting for a more powerful beam. It is a consequence of geometry. As long as ships operate on a curved Earth and lasers travel in straight lines, low-flying threats will retain the ability to hide below the horizon and reduce the time available for a shipboard laser to stop them.
