Introduction

The low cost of a laser shot is one of the most frequently cited advantages of directed energy weapons. Yet a laser does not become a practical weapon simply because it can generate a powerful beam. Why the Beam Is Only One Part of the Weapon

A military laser cannot simply point in the general direction of a threat and expect success. Unlike a missile, which carries its own guidance system after launch, a laser must continuously maintain energy on a specific spot on the target. Even a small drone moving unpredictably can break that engagement if tracking is lost for a fraction of a second.

To achieve this, modern laser weapons combine multiple subsystems:
