Introduction
A high-energy laser can only deliver its full effect if its energy remains concentrated on a very small area of the target. Fast steering mirrors (FSMs) are one of the key mechanisms that make this possible. Hidden inside the beam director, these mirrors make tiny, rapid angular adjustments that compensate for vibration, tracking errors, structural flexing and other disturbances. Fast steering mirrors do not operate independently. They are part of a closed-loop control system that constantly measures beam position and commands corrections.
Detecting the Error
Sensors first determine whether the beam is drifting away from the desired aim point. Depending on the design, these sensors may include tracking cameras, position-sensitive detectors, quadrant detectors or dedicated beam-monitoring optics. Moving the Mirror
The controller commands piezoelectric, electromagnetic or voice-coil actuators attached to the mirror. These actuators tilt the mirror by minute amounts in two axes. The mirror itself is only one part of the design challenge. Engineers must also minimise mass, structural resonance and mechanical coupling between the two steering axes.
